As a "local independent mechanic" myself, I would urge you to let him know you are hearing things you aren't used to and let him work through it with you. Unlike the dealer guys, we do not get to hear feel see smell the same tractors over and over, we see all ages, colors, condition, etc. Some noises they come in with can be one that has been such for years, and ALWAYS after a repair I hear EVERYTHING... and if I fix everything, the owner has to take out a second mortgage. So long story short, treat him right and give him a chance and hopefully he will do the same for you. As far as your problem, I would agree with the wrong gasket behind the housing as first suspect.
