RAW, 6 or 12 volts is like beauty, it is all in the eyes of the beholder. I like reliability coupled with economy so my choice would be 12 volts. A used alternator w/ a built in regulator plus a little fabricating of brackets and minor wiring and 12 volts would be available. I would replace the oldest battery in one of the family vehicles and recycle the old battery to the tractor. Nothing was done that can not be reversed plus the car is now more reliable. Personally, I do not like the currently available mechanical voltage regulators and 6 volt batteries due to price, reliability and quality. However, if you want to remain original appearing and upgrade to 12 volts I have been told that the generator/starters from the old cub cadet lawn mowers will fit and they are 12 volt. Just ignore the start feature.
