Overlapping steel threaded tapered plugs and grinding flat then paint is usually a very clean approach to a repair. Others have used a mechanical bolted on patch covering the crack (after two small holes are drilled at the very ends of the crack to stop its propagation. Others have cleaned the area for 2 inches on each side and on the ends, then used a thin first layer of JB weld covered by a mesh of fiberglass when uncured, then covered with another thin coat to blend in.
