Funny you should mention this, as just yesterday I was fiddling with the hitch geometry on the 454 I wrote about last year.
The non-stock setup that came with the machine didn't quite line up right and last summer I ended up using only one stabilizer; it came back from one mowing run with an amazing curve in it since (as you noticed) with only one stabilizer the arms are perfectly happy to swing side to side.
This week I re-fabricated the previous owner's home-made stabilizer mounts to put the pins closer to the right place and everything now seems to line up okay with two stabilizers.
Whenever I really feel like ruining a day I will lie under the axle and use my nifty cobalt left-hand bits to drill out the couple of busted bolts that used to hold the factory-original stabilizer mounts so I can put new correct ones on. I really wonder just what the previous owner was doing that managed to break off both mounts...
