If its a 12 volt system and has a true 12 volt coil YOU DO NOT USE A BALLAST OR THE SPARK WILL BE VERY WEAK.........(Toss the ballast)
A true 12 volt coil may be labeled "12 volt" orrrrrrrrrrrrr "12 volt NOT for use with ballast resistor" or "12 volt no ballast required"
A coil labeled "6 volts" or "12 volts for use with Ballast resistor" is in reality a 6 volt coil AND DOES NEED A BALLAST ON A 12 VOLT SYSTEM or it will overheat plus burn points quickly
Contrary to Billy Bob and Bubbas belief those coils DO NOTTTT I REPEAT NOTTTTTTTT HAVE A STAND ALONE DISCRETE BALLAST RESISTOR TUCKED AWAY SOMEWHERE INSIDE THE CAN.
Many typical old tractor 12 volt coils will have a LV primary resistance (measured between + and - terminals) of around 2.5 to under 4 ohms
If you have a 12 volt tractor and a 12 volt coil DO NOT USE A BALLAST OR THE SPARKS VERY WEAK
