I have read of people using a solution of antifreeze and water rather than calcium chloride. I have never tried this. It would appear to be a lot better for your rims in terms of corrosion; however, if one tire took to leaking, you might find a dead animal or two lying around(the stuff has a sweet taste). Based on my understanding of chemistry, I'd think rock salt would be even worse than calcium chloride in terms of rim corrosion. I'd go with weights if at all possible.
