Please do not use sand paper. Small bits of grit will embed themselvs in the copper and cause some nasty burning and arcing.( For the same reason you should never use sand paper on ignition points -- use a point file ) What you want is an armature ( or commutator ) stone. Looks like a flat stick of chalk or welders crayon ( without the grease ). Just hold it up against the armature as the tractor engine turns it. 'bout 30 seconds of work. I got mine at McMaster-Carr, but you should be able to get one at any electric motor re-build shop. Probably less than a buck. In a pinch you can use the end grain of a stick of hardwood, it works but not as good as a stone. And yes sand paper grades have changed since our iron was born.
