Good point, There are some "1 wire " regulators for a SI series Delco alternator that have a little wire strip connecting the two blades that come out of the regulator. This strip can be cut with a sidecutter to allow some voltage adjustment when you cut the strip. If you look down in there and see that connecting strip, you need to cut it to seperate the regulator blades, or do not connect anything to the #2 sense wire (tape or wire nut it)when wiring it as a 3 wire. The sense wire is not needed with a internal sensing "one wire" regulator.
I don't stock or use the regulators with the joined blades, so If I need to wire one for a generator light (new generation JD, etc)I add the sense wire anyway, so there is no need to add it later if a stock 3 wire alternator / regulator may be installed.
