A two stage: There is an auger, or 2, or 3, running fairly slow across the width of the snow blower, moving the snow to the middle of the blower. The second stage is a fast fan blower, that spins perpendicular to the cross augers really fast & blows the snow up the chute & away. Single stage: I see 3 styles, really. 1. A V plow, Sort of like the above 2 stage, but no cross augers - the snow just funnels in through the v-shaped sides into the center blower. Seems to plug up the worst? 2.A cross auger that spirals in to the middle, where there are big paddles on the auger that tosses the snow out the chute & away. These spin real fast. 3. One, but usually 2 large fans that spin real fast, it's like the high-speed blower in the 2-stage blower, but generally much bigger. Each fan has it's own chute, or one has to spin opposite & they share a chute. These really move a lot of snow. I've only used my 2-stage, so not qualified to say which is best in what. Here in Minnesote, I see the highway depts switching from huge old #3 single stage machines to very fast #2 single stage. Most farmers like the 2-stage on the back of a tractor. --->Paul
