I've had several IH diesels of this type and have always shut them down on gas. I run them until they shut down (when shutting off the switch) without dieseling in the gas position. MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH is to make sure you ALWAYS switch them back to the diesel position. If you don't you'll eventually warp a valve.
