Cut-off spokes with 38 inch rims would give you a popular sized tire option today and peace of mind that something will likely be available in your chosen width for decades to come.
40 inch ag rear tires haven't been mass-produced for years and likely never will be mass-produced again. Wider 36 inch tires are becoming harder to find. Try Miller or Friedrich for new tires in specialty or short-run sizes. See Miller's website for a comparison of newer and older tire sizing.
38's should be sourcable locally. Firestone or Titan should have charts online to compare how differently sized mounted tires would stand up height-wise to what you have now.
