Sure a tin can works. I have a 53 CA Allis which was bought new by my grandpa and it has never had a rain cap on it. The main reason is because the CA is bad about rain water running off the platform and right into the brake bands/drums. Therefore the CA never sets out over night if rain is in the forecast, but I always put a can over the muffler just to be safe.
