Positive to positive and negative to negative is exactly right. If you connect positive to negative (batteries in series) you will set up a 12 Volt system with two 6 Volt batteries. If you make the grievous mistake of connecting a 12 Volt battery to a 6 Volt battery nothing will work out. In series, you will create an 18 Volt system. In parallel, you may well cause an explosion in the 6 Volt battery. If you have a 12 Volt tractor, which uses two 6 Volt batteries, you can start your 6 Volt machine by connecting up to ONE of the batteries on the 12 Volt tractor. No harm will result. Remember, when jump starting, always connect in Parallel! Either vehicle can be negative or positive to ground and it won't make any difference to the jump starting procedure. I have jump started a VW Beetle with the Farmall M.
