The oil in the oil bath filter is just there to catch dirt particles. They are pulled in with the intake air by engine vacuum, and scream down the straight-a-way of the intake pipe. Because of inertia, the air and dirt particles can't make the 90 degree turn to get into the carb. They run head-long into the oil at the bottom. The air just bounces off, and then goes into the carb inlet. The dirt itsself gets trapped by the oil, and that's how the filter works. The weight of the oil doesn't make too much difference, except in extreme cold, you don't want it to be a solid, and allow the dirt to not penetrate and become trapped. I use the oil that I have drained from the engine oil pan most of the time. Once in a while, I dump it, wipe it out, wash it out with a parts cleaner, and refil with oil...........gn
