As a worst case scenario, the PTO has its own oil supply, not the oil in the rear end. There is a level plug under the hydraulic cylinder. If the oil gets away, the PTO will howl when it is off, then the bearings in planetary gears in the PTO begin to orbit as one, and the PTO will not stop. I just learned this the hard way.
