It's definitely the genetics. Some environmental problem brought it out. Unlikely it was fertilizer but some of the new chemicals will produce those kinds of symptoms under stress of too much moisture, drought, too hot, too cold or lack of root system. Ear set and size is determined very early, like when the corn is 4 leaf. John
