Help! I'm stumped - Farmall won't crank

Gentlemen- I am experiencing technical difficulties with my 1942 Farmall "A". It won't crank off the electric starter. I am using a 12 volt system (passenger car battery and single wire alternator). I don't have lights on the tractor, so the only electrical content is the starter. It has worked fine previously for the last 6 years I've owned it. In all cases listed below it will crank and start with the hand crank. History (of this dilemma) is as follows: (1) Tractor won't turn over. Sounds like dead battery. Charge battery.
(2) Tractor still won't turn over. Replace battery with known good battery.
(3) Tractor still won't turn over. Replace battery with battery from race car.
(4) Tractor still won't turn over. Jump with pickup truck with cables attached at battery.
(5) Tractor still won't turn over. Jump with pickup truck with cables attached directly to starter.
(6) Tractor starter engages and strains to turn engine approximately 1/4 turn.
(7) Sounds like a starter problem. Remove starter. Purchase another starter (used) from local used parts dealer. Starter spins when voltage applied laying in floor.
(8) Installed replacement starter. Nothing. Repeat items 1-6.
(9) Remove starter. Take to reputable local electrical shop to have rebuilt.
(10) Install rebuilt starter. Repeat items 1-6. Fool around with starter until totally dead.
(11) Ask around at work. Most suggest plan similar to above. Electrical expert suspects a mechanical interference (of course) between starter pinion and flywheel ring gear. The ring gear does have a couple bad spots, but has been that way forever.
(12) Write pitiful note on Farmall web page pleading for help. Any other ideas?
