Suffix code question

I have just gotten Guy Fays originaliy guide and was womdering about the suffix codes.Why dont all tractors have them?Let me explain.I have my grandfathers W-6.It was purchased in 1947 but is a 1946 midel,It came with electric lights and start and rubber,not steel.There is no suffix code on it,but according to the book it shoul have a W12B or a W12 at the least.Why would IH not label it as such?COuld all of this have been done at the dealer?Thanks for your help.TLK
