SMTA has a bigger diameter main shaft (top Shaft) than a M or SM. SMTA has a splined counter shaft. M and SM are keyed to gears. SM counter shaft has some sections where the gears go thats a bigger diameter than a M. First and reverse sliding gear is the same in most M and SM. Main shafts on most M and SM can be interchanged, but later ones had some improvements. Real late M and the SM got a input shaft and input shaft housing change. They can be interchanged if the matching housing is used. One bearing, seal and seal retainer and yoke also changed with the input. Early M can have some things different.
