Shawn, The jar assembly is called the pre-cleaner and is designed to filter out dust particles and other debris from the air before it goes into the oilbath portion of the air cleaner. On those models without the jar, the small mesh screen only kept out the large chunks (Corn husks, leaves, etc.) before the air was filtered by the oil in the reservoir at the bottom. You sure wouldn't want all that junk in your carb.//FB
