It is very hard to recut the threads with a tap. the old cast iron is hard, with deposits in the threads, and getting the tap started straight is tough. You probably don't need to tap it if the threads are good wnouigh to start the tap in, this is my experience. Get a good pipe nipple, put some high temperature anti-sieze compound on it, and get a 24" pipe wrench, then carefully screw the new nipple in tight. Even very poor threads will often hold with the new nipple. Remember there is really no significant internal pressure. The best solution if the threads don't hold is to take the manifold to a machine shop and have them renew the threads. New manifolds are about $125. Good luck, Andy Martin P.E.
