I have seven SMTA's and I have put fast hitches on most of them. I have also put fast hitches on my 650 and 660. The 400 fast hitch will bolt on if you change the rear frame lid (tranny/diferential/bull gear lid) that fits a 400. This is necessary to accomodate the rock shaft. You will need to drill holes in it to attach the steering support. Everything else will attach to it such as the the battery box, reservoir, and belt pully gearbox. You can also use your SMTA lid with the early fast hitch but you will have to fabricate a heavy bracket to handle the rock shaft pivot. 450/560 fast hitchs are also bolt-ons with the advantage of not having to modify anything. I think that the general consensus among people who have used both the early and later fast hitches is a preference for the earlier hardware. You will need to think about hydraulics. I always mount a three spool, open center, 4 way valve on a bracket along the left side of the battery box. When mounted vertically it fits well and looks as if IH put it there.
