The method I used which seemed to work pretty well was to remove tank and drop a short piece of fairly heavy chain into tank and (this is the work) shake vigorously. This will "knock loose" any scale, etc. I then used a good detergent and water rinse (I used Castrol Super Clean). This process may need repeated several times until rinse clears up. There are some other methods, but this worked for me. I did have some small particles get into the sediment bowl for a while after, but this is no big deal to clean out.
