MD REAR END

I removed the plug at the bottom of the rear end of my MD and was surprised to have about a gallon of water come out. I let some more oil come out, and figured by the color that I should change fluid. I put 80-90 back in. My question is where did the water come from? Is it condensation? How do I prevent it? Because of the water that was in there, is there anything else I should do to protect it? I have no idea how long the water had been in there. thanks
