Bad rotor can cause that as can points that need to be cleaned up. On a mag points play a very big part and funny how all it takes is one speck of dust and they do not work all the time. I use the flap from a point/plug box to clean points with. Slide it threw the points few times and look at it I bet you see a black line on that flap. As for that spark test that was something taught to me as a kid and once you learn that test it sticks in your mind and even if it hurts but your out where it is the only way you can test it sure as heck works as a test. I do it on lawn mowers all the time when I can not get a spark at the plug. Turn it over by hand and if it hurts then I know the plug is bad
