You can get a cheap diode from Radio Shack. Not sure what number to look for on the diode. Diodes are rated in peak reverse volts and amps. the PIV isn't critical with a 12v alternator. I would think a 5 amp diode would be plenty. I'm sure there are people on here that can give you better info on diodes. I'm sure the single diode used on a briggs alternator would work fine. so if you have an junk briggs motor off a riding mower use it. That diode handles at least 15 amps.
I replaced my diode with an idiot light which I purchased from auto zone, light and holder. I like the idiot light for 2 reasons, One it tells me the fuse going to the ignition/alternator is good and it also tells me when the alternator is charging. So does the ammeter.
