Firing or wiring or what?

Something easy I'm missing I'm sure. M starts but just sputters. Points, coil, condenser, plugs, battery (12-volt system), and wiring changed but still does it. Switch, ammeter, starter switch, and lights work. I live in town (non freezing climate),at the moment but start it every couple of months. Have not changed distributer cap yet. That's next on my list. Backfires if I hook spark plug wires the way the owner's manual shows. It will start and run at very slow sput, sput, sput; if I hook it up and fire it the way my dad had it. It is getting gas and spark but...? Any ideas would be appreciated.
