The head gasket is on backwards. The gasket fits both ways but there is ONE SMALL OIL HOLE that lets oil to the top of the head and if on backwards the oil passage is blocked off. Been there myself years ago. All the other holes line up no matter how you put the gasket on, all but that one hole.
