If there are pieces of bearing in front of the bull gear they will wedge between the gear and the housing as the gear turn in the forward direction. When in reverse the pieces will stay in front of the gear. Jacking up the axle may lift the gear high enough that it will not catch any of the pieces to pull them under the gear. If you force it forward hard enough it can push the pieces out through the new hole in the bottom of the housing.
