Failed to say there is a retaining ring. Maybe spiral type( cant remember for sure if thats the type) keeping the drum from sliding off the splined M&W bull pinion shaft. If you can get all the bolts removed from the adapter plate without removing the drum the shaft drum and other parts will come out together. I remember the 6 bolt holes being used to retain the big adapter plate as the same ones IH used to retain the differential carrier housing. If my memory is off maybe the five bolt holes used to mount the IH disc brake drum were used for the adapter plate if you can only find 5. Almost bet on the six though. Been a long time since I worked on a SM with one. Let us know how you make out.
