I have w400D that's pretty much the same engine and I've recently gone through a similar experience. I my case I narrowed down the poor running on gas problem to the no.1 clyinder. This clyinder wasn't firing correctly. After checking timing, carb., etc. Nothing seamed to help. It ran fine on diesel so I figured the diesel valves were ok. I took the rocker cover off and checked the starting valve clearances and low and behold the starting valves were not opening far enough to get proper air/gas flow. I adjusted as per spec. and it worked great afterward. Apparently, the starting valves furthest away from the cam/lever tend to not open as well as the middle ones.
