Zach nailed it. The only other thing it could be is the bearing on the top shaft. That was not the problem on mine, but the other three things were a problem on my H. Fairly common. I did break the ear off my lid, but I had an extra problem because one of the bolts broke off and that made the lid tougher to get off on that corner. It's welded back on and I will flap disc it someday to try an hide it. Oh well.
Check out my photobucket site. You can see how I did my H. I took everything off. I also had bad outer axle bearings so I pulled the axles and took the rear end right down to nothing. I did it 3 years ago and in gaskets, seals, bearings, used 4th/5th gear, and springs I had $900 into my rear end. Those outer axle bearings were $125 each.
