The two pumps are mounted piggy back and draw oil from same source and the main large suction tube in rear draws from bottom of case. However, that hose coming down from the top goes right back into that suction tube also as it is return oil from valves. It's purpose is to reduce cavitation, in other words , makes it easier for pumps to pull oil from rear frame. Any leaks in hose or looseness of pipe hose is connected to on top will cause air suction leaks.I should have mentioned also that there is an o-ring between trans housings where suction tube goes through and it can leak also.
