Yon need to check for voltage at both sides of the resistor with the key on / engine off before throwing parts at the problem. A wiring problem between the switch and the resistor, a bad resistor, or a problem with the points and/or condenser could all be a cause of your problem.
A bad wire will allow the engine to run while cranking because electrical power is furnished to the coil by the starter solenoid while cranking.
A bad resistor will act the same as a bad wire since it is just another component in the same circuit. No power will reach the coil.
Bad or poor points, condenser, or coil may provide enough spark to operate the engine while being provided 10 - 11 volts during cranking but may not be good enough provide enough spark when the voltage drops to about 6 volts when the starter solenoid no longer is providing resistor bypass current.
