Dirty Oil

Silly question: can you tell the difference between dirty detergent and non-detergent oil by looking at it? Don't have any personal experience with the non- stuff, but understood that it was supposed to remain relatively clear compared to the detergent type (because the crud tends to deposit rather than remain in suspension). Is this correct? Reason I'm asking is I've got dirty looking supposedly non-detergent oil in 300 Utility I recently purchased. If there's actually detergent oil in there, I've probably got 40+ years worth of crud breaking loose (and maybe serious problems). Thanks, Dick
