You must've put the CLUTCH DISK in backwards, not the pressure plate.
There is no way the tractor would go back together with the pressure plate in backwards.
How's the white smoke issue? White smoke is usually water vapor. If it doesn't clear up you've got coolant getting into your crankcase somehow. Odds are this is the reason the tractor was parked.
