I have had the same issue on several Farmall SC's and my latest 54SH. Ring gears are perfect to not in the greatest shape. I have the starters rebuilt with the newer clutch type throw out 1st. My rebuilder refers to them as the "12v conversion starter rebuild". The newer type doesn't hit as hard on 12v as the old spring type. This has worked every time! I will replace the ring gears when I have to split the tractor.
Have the starter checked or rebuilt before you split the tractor.
