It was way before my time, but a "big" farmer back in the 30's had two 22-36 McD tractors on steel. A farm hand that worked for him said that he had to keep gas cans at both ends of the field just to keep going when they plowed! I know my old 10-20 surprised me 45 years ago when I switched from rubber to steel rear wheels. It used about twice as much gas.
