M with vertically mounted distributor

I've looked at a bunch of Ms over the past months, and every one had the distributor and coil mounted on their side (horizontally, in other words). But recently, I looked at a '49 M that had the distributor and coil mounted in a vertical manner. It immediately caught my attention, and looked weird. Is this vertical distributor particular to certain years of production, or perhaps Ms that came out of one factory or the other? Just wondering what the deal is.
