Cub electric

Actually I am trying to trouble shoot my father-in-law's Cub problem long distance When the battery is getting low it sputters and soon stops and cannot be started again until the battery is recharged. When it is used for about 20 minutes, even though the battery has recently been charged, it starts to sputter in a similar manner, but if he stops mowing, he can at least get it back to the barn. When he goes out several hours later, it starts right up. Any thoughts??
