Agree John! Problem sounds like a short in the starter.
This is what happened to mine:
The Super M is equipped with a saddle type manual starter switch perched directly atop the starter. The starter's power terminal is a simple copper button poking thru the motor frame. It is insulated from the frame by a bakelite or nylon bushing.
As the terminal button gradually wore down it caused the starter switch contact bar to arc and run hot. This melted the button's insulating bushing and caused a short. It also burned out the starter switch and caused the battery cables to overheat.
Fix was to have the starter shop replace the terminal button and insulator - about $40. This and a new saddle switch had the starter again working perfectly.
