The price does sound a little high but dealers are always generally higher than private sales. The rear end in my 706 has that hum you are talking about but it has never caused me even the slightest problem. The gear shift slack is just due to age and shouldn't be a problem unless it's sloppy. New and used parts are extremely easy to find and overall they are a fairly simple tractor to work on. I bought mine from a dealer and paid probably 20% more than a private sale but it was my first full sized tractor and I liked it and still don't regret it. If the machine feels right to you buy it and don't look back.
