Way back when - when I worked at a Materials & Research Lab - we tested a LOT of different fasteners. Split Lock washers as a whole only worked a VERY small percentage of the time - and only when torqued PROPERLY. Once used, they failed EVERY time to function properly when re-installed. The whole system is based on something that only "works" when the bolt is already loose. They are a good "spacer", but not much more..... I still use them - even though I know they don't really work, but they LOOK right on old tractors. The problem with reusing them is - they get work hardened and brittle, then break CAUSING the bolt to loosen.
