I found out this summer that the two stop collars just hold the steering column in place, probably to avoid forces being placed on the u-joints, they will slip if the worm gear is not held in place by it's bearing. The big nut got loose and fell off of an M, letting the worm gear bearing move forward. Steering got progressively worse as the stop collar slipped. Good news! The nut lands in the grill area when it falls off and is there when you need it most (by the side of the road, with a baler in tow, 10 miles from home).
