Hold them for a minimum of 45 seconds and KEEP holding them while you are starting it. If it starts with only 10 seconds of holding them, it surely will start fine and clear up fine with the proper starting procedure. Hold them on while cranking, don't let go and then go back and hold them. It is a precombustion chamber style engine and they need the heat from those glow plugs until sufficient turbulence is built from the heat developed in the cyl. They use a low pressure injection nozzle and do not provide that break up of fuel like a direct injection engine does.
