Ted, I have the same problem withe every one wire alternator that I have installed. If you will take it off and install a plain old simple alternator available from any auto discount store as per BobM's drawing all the problems will go away and the cost is less. The fault in the one wire alternator is internally and cannot be repaired without expense. There is a constant drain due to the manner in which the excitation voltage is fed and the choice of semiconductors chosen by the outfit that converted the alternator to one wire. The one wire feature is not worth the expense and aggravation. If you check back here in about an hour I am certain that someone with come along to argue this issue and personally has a one wire system that holds a charge indefinitely. This may be true but it is the exception. Your problem supports my position, and your problem is not the first one of this nature that I have responded to.
