Dave, My 1950 Super-A was sluggish as you describe, even with a 12V conversion. I took the starter off, dissassembled it, cleaned the armature, installed new brushes (avaliable from NAPA), lubed the bearings, and now it spins about a billion RPM, so fast that its scary, (being a 12V conversion)
