There's three rim styles I can think of:
1 - Non-adjustable tread width (smooth rim clamped to the front wheel hub)
2 - Early adjustable width (rim has 3 lugs that bolt to the wheel hub, each lug secured to the rim with 3 rivets)
3 - Late adjustable width (similar to above but each lug attached with 4 rivets)

Don't know when the switch was made from #2 to #3 - I think about 1951. But the early and late style adjustable rims are freely interchangeable.

And there's a single front tire rim which is completely different from all of the above...
