I replaced the seals on either side of the brake drum on the left side of my A. When I removed the assembly I did not find a felt seal. When I ordered the seals I didn't order a felt seal because I didn't know there was originally one there. I was looking closely at the diagram in the shop manual and discovered there was one on the final drive side but not on the transmission side. My questions are, with it all together (minus the felt seal) should I expect premature failure of the seal? Why is the felt seal only on the final drive side? I believe the use of the felt seal is to keep the dirt away from the oil seal, if that is the case shouldn't there be just as much foreign material on the trans. side of the brake?
