Some soils will till W/O coulters. Most won't turn stubble and organics under very well. Weed stems and corn stalks wrap onto the beams and cause operator irritability. Our plows in clay riddled Northern Indiana were always coulter equipped. Lantz coulters with two blades were common. The second blade was cupped and set to top curl the cut edge of the land over into the furrow. This covered more trash. Others had a corrugated radial crimp causing them to get traction in their cut and turn such that trash was sliced through. I believe that they also make a plow pull easier in most soils. Today's Featured Article - Tractor Traction - by Chris Pratt. Our first bout with traction problems came when cultivatin with our Massey-Harris Pony. Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
